The traditional IBM Forum for 2009 took place on October 22 in Hilton hotel, Sofia in the "Mussala" hall. The 2009 forum's subject was Smart Cities and how to build a Smarter and more intelligent Sofia. Mrs. Yordanka Fandukova - running for a Mayor and Mr. Alexander Rakov - General director IBM, Bulgaria officially inaugurated the global forum.

As part of IBM's multi-global platform, A Smarter Planet, the event Smart Cities Sofia is held parallel with the forum SmartCities in the modern mega policies Berlin and New York. On these forums, the social and technological challenges facing our cities are being discussed.

For Smart cities to succeed, the Chairman and CEO of IBM Sam Palmisano shared: "They need to be more than instrumented, interconnected and intelligent. They also need collaborative leaders who will lead by listening." at the opening of the forum SmartCities in New York, October 1, 2009.

According to research, by year 2050, 70% of the population on Earth will live in the big cities. That is why building Smarter cities is one of the most crucial imperatives for our planet in the 21st century. Operationally, these Smarter cities integrate their core systems - transport, education, healthcare, public safety, energy, water and utilities and government services. As a result, they can monitor operations, improve performance and respond to the needs of their jurisdictions each day in near real time. Smarter cities are a true system of systems. As a modern city, Sofia follows the steps of the dynamic, transparent, inclusive and adaptive Smarter cities.

We have the tools and the models to help build a more sustainable urbanized world. Certainly, it won't be easy - real innovation never is. But we can and we must work together to transform our cities and the systems in a positive direction.
